Many people nowadays could not live without a smart phone. They find this gadget very handy and convenient. Who wouldn’t be? Being a handheld device that can do so many things from communicating with other phones and connecting online to browsing information and purchasing items on the internet, it’s all you would want to have.
A 2012 Nielsen report revealed that young adults make up the most number of smart phone owners in the U.S. Specifically, 74 percent of those aged 25 to 34 now own smart phones. The number of teens (13-17) who own the gadget is also on the rise.
And because it’s very useful and valuable, not to mention expensive, a growing number of smart phone users are now getting insurance for their most treasured gadget. This is understandable especially with the charges involved in the subscription and its high selling price.
Many telecommunication companies do offer insurance for smart phones bought from them. But they can be very costly particularly if you need to buy several phones for your family members.
Another option is to purchase extended warranty for up to two years. Do remember, however, that a warranty covers only defects in your device which is different from an insurance plan that provides coverage in case your phone gets damaged or stolen.
Your other choice is to ensure that your home contents insurance covers your mobile phone. If you’re not certain about this, it would be best to ask your insurer. In the event your home insurance does not cover smart phones, you can still pay additional premium. Or you may obtain personal possessions cover that will save you from further costs when your gadget gets stolen or damaged outside your home.
The downside to this is the high deductible involved and the possibility of you paying more than the value of your phone in the event you want to make a claim for a damaged or stolen unit. If this is the option you like, though, you just have to make sure that you take extra care of your gadget to save you from additional costs.
Do not hesitate to ask about the terms and conditions of an insurance policy when you’re shopping for a new smart phone. Customers always have a right to ask questions and it’s better to be clear about everything before you commit to a contract. This way, you know what you’re getting into and the costs involved in case something wrong happens with your phone.
